What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the practice of cultivating awareness of the present moment in a nonjudgmental way. Mindfulness involves paying attention to our five senses to tune into thought processes, emotions, physical sensations, and the immediate environment surrounding us. People are frequently overwhelmed by worries and concerns fixated on the past and future that take away from the present moment experience. When practiced regularly, mindfulness has been shown to improve attention spans, increase emotional regulation and self-awareness, and develop compassion in individuals.
Mindfulness has its roots in Buddhist religious traditions, however, has also been growing in other non-religious fields, including healthcare, mental health, and education, over the past 30 years. Jon Kabat-Zinn founded Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in 1979 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center to aid patients suffering from chronic pain. Since 1979, mindfulness has become increasingly incorporated into mental health care and education systems due to its many potential benefits. Many schools across the nation have introduced basic mindfulness practices into their communities to encourage students to take time to care for themselves.
